Established as a segment at ITB Berlin in 2017, the medical tourism market is booming. The high-volume medical tourism industry is expanding rapidly and represents a new, sustainable tourism market. In order to promote awareness for the show segment, ITB Berlin has since 2021 been presenting the ITB Medical Tourism Award to destinations that have distinguished themselves by providing outstanding medical facilities and innovative services together with a comprehensive approach to healthcare and nursing.

2023 marked the first occasion that the award went to Asia, to the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare of India. Previous winners were the National Tourism Board of Croatia in 2021 and the Slovak Spa Association in 2022. In addition to globally recognised traditional healing methods and concepts such as yoga, meditation and Ayurveda, India today also offers ultra-modern, first-class and affordable medical care, which is why the country now successfully attracts many patients from around the world.

At ITB Berlin 2023, for the first time, experts from Germany and all parts of the world gathered in a dedicated display hall. This year, following the award first being handed out at the Medical Night of ITB in Berlin, its subsequent presentation to ministry representatives in New Delhi at Advance Health Care India 2023 (AHCI) marked a special occasion.

ITB Berlin invites interested destinations and trade visitors to actively take part in the Medical Tourism segment in 2024.
