From Backpack to Compartment
60 Years of Stories: Dirk, a true rail romantic, shares adventures, nights under the stars, and unforgettable moments from his final Interrail journey.
He’s a lifelong travelholic, a true romantic of the rails, and quite possibly one of the last old-school Interrail adventurers. Since his very first tour in 1994, Dirk has travelled Europe by train with nothing but a backpack, a timetable, and an open mind. Growing up in a family where rail travel was a way of life, his path to the tracks felt inevitable. Instead of becoming a train driver himself, he took a seat in the rear of the trains - and chose a different career path, while remaining closely connected to the rails.

Now, over 30 years later, Dirk has completed what may have been his final big Interrail journey, and we were lucky enough to join him for a part of it.
In his early 50s, but with the energy and curiosity of someone much younger, Dirk took us deep into the world of Interrail. In our exclusive video interview, he shares stories of his most memorable tour, surprises under the tent, and the magic that still lingers in Europe’s railways.
